I am not holier than thou nor do I claim to be.

I believe that there is a time and place for things. Things that are deemed too personal should be kept PRIVATE and OUT of the workplace. When there is work to be done, there is work to be done. Whatever a person does in their personal life is their business. However, if a person brings visual elements of their personal life into my place of employment and expose me to it without warning, I find that person to be a complete and total idiot. As a result, I am outraged at this person for putting me in a situation that would not only make me feel uncomfortable but cause me to lose focus in my job and eventually want to go home for the evening.

Was this a co=worker? No. Was this a manager? No. Was this a customer? Yes.

As part of my job, I develop photos. Usually, I go through the pictures to approve them for processing. This customer decides to come in and try to develop photos which, unbeknownst to me until they showed up on the screen, were explicit and not suitable for public viewing.

I reported this incident to management. The customer came back to claim his photos but was informed that, due to the content, they could not be sold. He was upset and claimed that he was told by one of our other managers he could have them developed. They were not and the customer eventually left. I had never experienced a situation like this before. As a result of being put in this situation, I felt that I could not continue my shift and asked to go home.

Thankfully, I still have a job. I’m 38 years old, focused on my career, and don’t need bulls~~~ like this in my professional life.

The deviant you sadly encountered is so wrapped up in his particular peccadillo that he’s forgotten it’s meant to be kept it private. This single minded absorption is his fantasies is leading him by the nose into a life of extreme egocentrism. He’s become a solipsist, he can no longer empathize with anyone or anything beyond himself so he cannot even conceive that other people may not want to see evidence of his “hobby”.

That being said, given your job I’m surprised you hadn’t already encountered self-centered idiots who wanted photos of their private “activities” printed professionally. Before digital cameras, smart phones, and the like, murderers, rapists, child molesters, and other fiends in human shape were routinely caught when they mindlessly dropped off their “hobby” snapshots to be developed.

This may have been the first time, but I’m sorry to tell you it won’t be the last.

Do not date. Do not impregnate. Do not co-habitate. Above all, do not marry. Reclaim and never again surrender your personal sovereignty.

Just like any job involving the public …… you will encounter a cross section …. which unfortunately will include fools, idiots and pervs.

All you can do is your job.
