Both the bride and groom come down the aisle, each carrying a lit candle.  When they reach the altar, they use those candles to light a third one and then blow them out.  It’s supposed to be symbolic of the two becoming “one”.

 

However, there’s a flaw in that.  It assumes that the spouses merge and become indistinguishable from one another.  We know that’s not the case, both biologically and legally.  However, it also implies that the freedoms one had before the wedding cease to exist, rather than adding to the marriage.  That part is, sadly, accurate, especially for the groom.
